Google has just announced that, starting in January 2027, you will no longer be able to send emails from non-Google email addresses through Gmail on the web or use Gmail to automatically fetch emails from those accounts using POP or Gmailify.
If you use Gmail to manage email accounts from providers such as Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, Outlook.com, or other non-Google services, several features are being discontinued. For example, Gmail’s “Send as” feature for third-party email accounts is being removed.
Before, if you added another email account to Gmail, you could send and reply to messages using an external email address without leaving Gmail. That option will no longer be available for non-Google accounts. This change does not affect Gmail addresses or Google Workspace aliases.
As previously announced, Google is also removing support for Gmailify, which brought Gmail features such as spam filtering and inbox organization to supported third-party accounts. Gmail will also not use POP to automatically fetch emails from other email accounts on the web.
If you already imported emails into Gmail, those messages will stay in your mailbox. Only future syncing and importing will stop.
You can still:
- Add and use third-party email accounts in the Gmail mobile app on Android, iPhone, and iPad.
- Access your Gmail account through desktop email programs such as Outlook, Thunderbird, or Apple Mail using IMAP or POP.
- Use the Gmail API if you access Gmail through software or automation.
- Send emails from other Gmail addresses or Google Workspace aliases using Gmail’s existing “Send as” feature.
Google says it is retiring these features because they require a large amount of maintenance compared to how many people still use them. Google has also warned against using browser extensions or third-party services that promise to restore the discontinued features, as many require access to your email credentials or account permissions.
