ProtonMail down for hours due to data center cooling failure

ProtonMail just went down for hours after it suffered a major outage caused by a cooling failure in Proton’s data center in Frankfurt, Germany.

At 00:38 CEST, Proton shared that it had identified the cooling failure and had shifted traffic to backup sites. A fix followed at 01:57 CEST, with most services recovering while Proton continued work on remaining instances.

By 02:27 CEST, Proton posted that the outage was largely resolved. Some email delivery and reception delays and notification problems remained, but the company said no data was lost. Proton later confirmed that the remaining minor issues had also been resolved.

Proton says there is no reported data loss from this incident, and it will publish a post-mortem on the incident after its cleanup work is complete. All emails that did not arrive should now be in your inbox.
