QMail’s quantum-safe email protocol is now available for download through its Windows desktop client.
Unlike Gmail, Outlook, or encrypted email services such as Proton Mail, QMail says it does not store your entire email on a single server. Instead, every message is split into multiple encrypted fragments and distributed across independent servers. According to the company, no single server can reconstruct your message or identify who you are communicating with.
QMail argues that phishing attacks and spam cannot be solved by improving existing email protocols alone. Instead, these problems require a completely new email architecture.
To support that approach, QMail introduces a payment-based inbox. If someone you do not know wants to email you, they must attach a small CloudCoin payment. Once you approve or whitelist that sender, future emails can be delivered without any payment. QMail says this makes large-scale spam campaigns too expensive to operate.
QMail is also replacing traditional HTML emails with its own Compact Binary Document Format (CBDF), which it claims reduces message sizes while eliminating scripts and tracking pixels commonly embedded in HTML emails.
Finally, the QMail whitepaper describes the platform as using a distributed key exchange system designed to address future quantum computing threats. The approach replaces conventional encryption methods that could become vulnerable as quantum computers mature. Those claims have yet to be verified because the technology has not seen widespread adoption.
One potential drawback of QMail’s approach is the paid inbox model. It could make it harder for legitimate first-time contacts, including prospective customers, to reach you before they are approved. It is also unclear how businesses that rely on unsolicited enquiries or support requests would adapt if first-time senders are required to attach a payment.
